This module discusses the value and importance of improving pedagogical content knowledge. Connecting content-specific and cross-curricular strategies can address and anticipate topics that may present students the greatest challenges. There are many resources available to deepen knowledge of subject matter and engage in professional development opportunities at the national, state, and local levels. Teachers who leverage deepening knowledge in their content areas are able to recognize the links between concepts and improved student learning. Pivotal to this connection is the transfer of learning when applied to real-life situations.
Now that you've examined Enhancing Content and Pedagogical Knowledge consider how might you answer these questions differently:
- How can content area resources and methods increase your knowledge and student understanding?
- How can honing your teaching skills (pedagogy) in your content area lead to improved teaching, cross-curricular strategies, and learning?

1. Take the Final Assessment.
After completion of this module, you should have a firm understanding of how content knowledge is paramount in transferring information/knowledge to students. Ongoing professional development is a key component in maximizing this content knowledge. Participating in a professional learning community (PLC) to enhance content knowledge or pedagogical practice has started to become commonplace in many districts.
Compose two well-developed paragraphs of five to seven sentences each.
- Paragraph 1: Research and consider content-focused PLC opportunities in your school, community, and region. Write a paragraph to describe 4 or more PLC opportunities that you are either a current participant or would consider participating in.
- Paragraph 2: Describe how each PLC would enhance your content expertise.
