Conclusion

When provided with appropriate training, support, and supervision, volunteers and paraprofessionals can make substantive contributions to the success of your classroom.  Effective supervision and leadership can lead to increased communication, higher team morale, more efficiency, better team cohesion, and higher student outcomes (Giangreco, Edelman, Broer, & Doyle, 2001).  By becoming informed of the roles, standards, and guidelines that the paraeducator must meet, and gaining skills specific to the support and direct supervision of this cadre in the school community, teachers gain a valuable asset in the classroom.  Creating and communicating clear expectations and an agreed upon job description help to build a positive relationship within your classroom and the school community at large.

Think back to your initial responses to the questions below.  After completing Supervising Volunteers and Paraprofessionals, do you still agree with your initial responses?  What would you change or add to your initial responses?

  • How can understanding the roles, standards, and guidelines for paraprofessionals aid in their supervision?
  • How can volunteers and paraprofessionals best be supported?
  • How can training enhance paraprofessional skills?

1. Take the Final Assessment.

Review your preassessment reflection and knowledge check submission.  In a two paragraph response, discuss the strategies you learned in this module for effectively supervising and supporting paraprofessionals. Be sure that your response:

  • Describes how you would acclimate paraprofessionals to the routines and procedures in your classroom.

  • Explains how to ensure that paraprofessionals are meeting the needs of students and are abiding by all state and federal regulations.

  • Discusses how paraprofessionals should function as a member of a multidisciplinary team.

  • Provides examples of how you would provide or access professional development to assist the paraprofessional in gaining new skills.
