Practice Scenario 1

Roles, Standards, and Guidelines for Paraprofessionals

Each district has its own Strategic Plan Special Education Report that includes verbiage regarding the roles, standards, and guidelines for paraprofessionals. Here is a sample - East Penn SD Special Education Plan - specifically focus on pages 10-14.

Now, find your district’s version.  Consider how you may change your practice to enhance the skills of the paraprofessional either assigned with you or for one assigned within your building.

Support and Supervision of Volunteers and Paraprofessionals

Maximizing the success of paraprofessional assistance requires continuous monitoring.  One method of support and supervision that is extremely effective is the use of “mentors” or “lead paraprofessionals” who maintain regular contact with paraprofessionals . The mentors must meet with the paraprofessional supervisor on a regularly scheduled basis to discuss the progress of the paraprofessional.

As you work with or observe another classroom paraprofessional, use this observation form to collect evidence.

Training Opportunities for Teachers and the Paraprofessionals They Supervise

A good Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) should include components which support efforts when working with students: Prevention, Teaching, and Responding. Access the PBISWorld.com Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP) site to review Why, When, And How to use a BIP.  Then view samples of BIPs before trying one on your own.  

Using the BIP for students with ADD, ADHD, poor organization, inattentive, unfocused, off task, distracted, fidgety, hyperactive, and more, practice completing the form.  For your review and assistance, this sample completed BIP has been provided.

 

 

2. Take the Knowledge Check Assessment.

After you have read and thought about the Explore Examples and Practice Scenarios in this module, consider what steps you can take to better ensure that paraprofessionals are effectively contributing to the classroom environment.  In a two paragraph response, explain how your ideas align with the proficient teacher criteria in the Managing Classroom Procedures (2c) component. Ensure that your response includes the following:

  • Discuss how knowledge of the roles, standards, and guidelines for paraprofessionals informs your supervision.

  • Explain how to ensure that paraprofessionals have the necessary training and support to carry out their assigned duties.

In your response, please be sure to incorporate strategies from the module content with significant and specific discussion.
