My Professional Learning Community

As you read through Rick DuFour’s article What is a Professional Learning Community?, consider your own educational setting and how you might respond to the following questions:

  • What attempts at forming Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) have your colleagues and you made?
  • If you are a part of a PLC, how have you grown professionally from this experience?
  • How might you gain more skill as a teacher by being a vital part of this PLC?
  • If you are not part of a PLC, what measures could you take to plan or suggest the implementation of a small PLC for your own growth as a teacher?
  • Consider which articles you would suggest for your administrator to read in order to encourage him/her to schedule time for PLCs.

Lifelong Learning

In order to foster lifelong learning for students, educators need to accept the challenges and benefits of lifelong learning for themselves.
Part 1
Read the article Critical Issue: Terms of Engagement – Rethinking Teachers’ Independent Learning Traits, Think about how one of the three learner challenges or one of the two learning mechanisms identified in the article could make a difference in your own lifelong learning.

What could you do to follow up on that topic and incorporate it into your own learning plan?

Utilizing the “Professional Growth Plan Worksheet”, consider at least one goal that aligns with either planning and preparation, instruction, and/or the learning environment. Identify the action steps you would consider, what resources you may need, and a target date for completion. Reflect on this practice and how it would enhance your own professionalism.

  • How can a Professional Growth Plan strengthen content knowledge and pedagogical skills?
