Fair Assessments

In Module 2 we examined Pennsylvania's Clear Standards and how the Standards Aligned System organizes them in a standards tree. We also examined the components of the Standards Tree including Assessment Anchors and Eligible Content which identify the knowledge and skills students are being held accountable for on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA). In this module we will look at using the SAS methodology to create fair assessments that accurately measure your students' mastery of the instruction.

Learning Objectives

After completing this module you will be able to:

  • Define what is meant by summative, formative, diagnostic and benchmark assessments.
  • Explain how fair assessments foster learning.
  • Develop formative assessment strategies using the SAS methodology.
  • Demonstrate the use of engaging formative assessment strategies to measure students' depth of knowledge.
  • Create a summative assessment (end of unit lesson or end of lesson assessment) in your area of expertise that insures that your students are prepared to advance to the next area of instruction.
