Learning Activity B-1

Incorporating the Gradual Release Model in Instruction

Assignment Objectives

  • Recognize instructional goals that fully engage students and create independent learners.

Written Response
Total 20 points Rubric (15/20 points required to pass)

After reading the article Gradual Release of Responsibility, describe how you could structure your instruction to utilize the Gradual Release Model.

  • Using one specific example, describe in a paragraph how you would provide guided instruction that will actively engage students and prepare them for collaborative learning. If your educational role involves supporting students outside of the classroom, how will you support other teachers to accomplish this goal?
  • Write an additional paragraph on how you will continue to support your students when they are ready to reach the ultimate goal of independent learning.
  • Identify any challenges that you foresee in helping your students to become fully independent learners, and describe what you could do to help your students overcome these hurdles.
  • Reflect on the special populations (ELL/ESL, minimal reading ability, etc.) that will need to be considered during the planning and implementation of your lessons. **If you are not currently teaching, predict the considerations you will need to make for planning and implementation. Or, if your educational role involves supporting students outside of the classroom, articulate specific examples of how you will continue to support ELL/ESL and minimal reading ability learners.

Your response must be at least two double-spaced pages. If you are typing your response directly into the Assignments Tool, include at least five developed paragraphs.
